New weight loss pill approved

The USDA is very stringent regarding approval of weight loss products in the United States. A new, safe and highly effective weight loss pill has just been approved in June of 2012. This is the first time in over thirteen years that a new weight loss pill has been approved for consumers in the USA. It’s called Belviq, or lorcaserin hydrochloride, and is manufactured by Arena Pharmaceutical.

This new diet pill will be prescribed for only those over 18 with a BMI of 27 or higher, and only if there’s an associated weight condition, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Any BMI at 27 or higher is designated as overweight. An adult with a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese, and is approved for Belviq, also. It is definitely not to be taken if pregnant.

That portion of your brain the controls appetite, called the serotonin 2C receptor, is the focus of Belviq. It should be mentioned that the diet drug known as “Fen-phen” in the 90s also controlled the hormone released by this part of the brain. Fen-phen was believed to have caused heart problems, but Belvic only focuses on the serotonin 2C receptor, which signals hunger. Belviq has already been proven safe according to Arena Pharmaceutical.

The New England Journal of Medicine documented the results of this clinical study for the effectiveness of Belviq. The study found half of the obese participants who consumed Belviq successfully shed five percent or more of their weight. This was much higher than the 20 percent who took a placebo with the same results. Twenty percent of Belviq participants lost at least ten percent of their weight, which was much higher than the seven percent who took the placebo.

Also significant is the fact that those who used Belviq for a couple years kept their weight loss much better than those who changed to a placebo after a year of use. Due to the “Phen-phen” scare in the 90s, which may have caused heart valve damage to users, those participating in the Belviq study were closely observed for any heart problem developments. There were no reports of any heart condition among any of them.

Many have already lost much weight safely who had failed using other drugs. One example of success in losing weight was that by Lisa Sutter. She took Belviq for only one year during the study, and shed 40 pounds. She said that her self esteem improved, and also has a better relationship with her significant other. The Washington D.C. resident told the FDA officials that her original weight gain was from the pregnancy with her children, and she just couldn’t shed the weight until turning her life for the better when she participated in the Belviq research program. She credits this as one of the best decisions she’s ever made. If you’re having a difficult time losing stubborn pounds, now you may consider a visit to your family doctor, and ask about a prescription for this new highly effective product.
